Bored in Your Role? – Challenge Yourself!

Posted by Trish on Sep 5, 2009 in Career Growth |

Are you feeling a little ‘stale’ in your job? Have you been in your current position for close to or over three years? Perhaps your company does not recognize your contributions as readily as they do ‘revenue – producing’ professionals. On the other hand, it could well be that you have allowed yourself to become so ‘comfortable’ in your role, you have not taken the time or expended the essential effort required to challenge yourself, and/or be seriously considered for a promotion.

It is much easier to remain in a role you are confident in and know like the back of your hand, while at the same time, gain the welcomed recognition for your knowledge and skills in your particular area of expertise.

Often it is the fear of failure, or even success that is a frightening prospect for each of us. In the ‘comfort zone’ of a role that is second nature to you, it is important to recognize that one of the primary reasons you do not find yourself motivated to move forward is your desire to maintain the ‘control’ that you have naturally become accustomed to due to your ‘ inaction’.

However, if you will re-evaluate your job, and carefully consider options for ‘expanding’ your role ,which engages incorporating your other skills and interests, you will be able to ‘challenge’ yourself and create what I like to call a ‘self-promotion’. This action will circumvent the bored ‘stale’ state you are currently living with.

This ’evaluation process’ is an important and necessary step prior to aligning yourself with potential promotion opportunities that will come up in the future.

Regardless of your title or job description, challenging yourself is a healthy and rewarding exercise in and of itself. Your personal rewards are of course unique to each of you, but I am confident that they will illuminate self-satisfaction and the acknowledgement that you can ‘stretch’ outside of the ‘comfort zone’ you currently live in, whether on a professional or personal level.

Some ideas for challenging yourself could look like the following examples:

  • For a ‘Data Entry’ Operator’, see how many ‘more’ keystrokes you can produce on a daily and weekly basis with top speed and accuracy;
  • ‘Administrative or Executive Assistants’ may take on a ‘new project’ that holds a definite ‘learning curve’ for them;
  • ‘Word Processors’ can take free ‘on-line courses’ either through your firm during the workday or on a weekly basis at home;
  • ‘Receptionists’ can take on the task of achieving ‘in-depth knowledge’ of their telephone systems and meeting room phone capabilities, resulting in offering improved or ‘new’ functions that all staff can enjoy;
  • ‘Mailroom Clerks’ can see how fast and efficiently they can deliver the mail each day and process incoming and outgoing courier packages etc.

I sincerely hope you ‘take the challenge’ and permit yourself to grow and become more self-aware in the process. Your promotion could be just around the corner if you will give yourself a chance
