‘News Flash’ – EI Rolls Jump in September
OTTAWA — The number of people collecting employment insurance benefits jumped more than seven per cent in September, after declining in the previous two months, as the economy struggled to recover from the first recession since the early 1990s.
Regular EI recipients grew by 54,300 to 818,020 during the month, with biggest increases coming in Ontario, Alberta and British Columbia, Statistics Canada reported Tuesday.
The September total is up 63.5 per cent since peak employment in October 2008.
Although the Canadian economy added jobs in September, the higher EI rolls during the month likely reflects “a lag” from previous employment declines, said Statistics Canada analyst Vincent Ferrao.
“We need a few months to see if a pattern is developing.”
EI beneficiaries in Ontario increased by 22,520, or nine per cent, to 271,680, following declines in July and August. “Since the start of the labour market downturn, Ontario has experienced the fastest rate of employment decline among all provinces,” Statistics Canada said.
In Alberta, recipients soared by 14,390, or 25 per cent, to 71,910, while in B.C. saw an increase of 11,280, or 12.8 per cent, to 56,290.
The biggest increases in EI benefits were among young people under 25 — mainly males. On an annual basis, recipients grew by 28,400, or 91.3 per cent, to 59,480 in September….
